Lake Street Excavations
A Toy Theater Extravaganza
March 4 - 20, 2005
By HOBT Company Members and Friends
In the spring of 2005, as road crews begin taking Lake Street down to the dirt as part of a total reconstruction project, HOBT artists will unearth stories of real people and old times to share the fascinating history of Lake Street and the symbolic ways in which this roadway ties together people and cultures to the natural world.
First a path for deer, buffalo and other animals, later as a trade route for Anishinabe, Dakota, and Winnebago, and much later as a commercial district for a never-ending wave of immigrants, Lake Street pulses with the vibrancy and energy of its rich history. Always changing and ever moving there are many stories buried in this street; stories that continue each day on this great cultural crossroads.
Like pearls strung along the thread of Lake Street, these giant tales will be performed in intimate settings on multiple toy theater stages, providing a glimpse into the dynamic legacy of this great street.
