Message from HOBT

Resources and Ways to Help

We at HOBT are mourning the murder of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis Police officers here in our neighborhood. In the time of COVID-19, this is a trauma upon trauma for our black siblings.

We know this for certain: George Floyd should be alive today. George’s life mattered. Black Lives Matter. We know the system is not broken, it is functioning just as it was designed: to protect whiteness and wealth at all costs, at the costs of black lives, black dreams, black futures. The system is guilty and needs a profound transformation: to be abolished and reformed away from its original design. The silence of historically white-led organizations, like ours, is violent.

We will not be silent. This spring we launched our Rooted in Resource Community Map to connect neighbors to tell their stories in their voices, and call on one another for support. On the map at the corner of 38th and Chicago you will find a page (the page you're reading right now) with more information and ways to support the movement for justice and accountability for George Floyd. We will be updating this page regularly, following the leadership of black organizers as they issue calls for action and support.

We will continue to work in accomplice and allyship with our black siblings to reimagine the role of police in our community, and to bring justice for George Floyd by demanding charges of the four officers responsible for George’s murder.

We ask the community to continue to act as you are able and feel safe in the time of COVID-19: make calls, donate, show up, take care of each other. White and non-black community members, we encourage you to do your own deep anti-racism work and to follow the lead of black organizers in building a future beyond police.

In Solidarity,

The HOBT Staff

Over the past three years, we have been doing deep internal work to dismantle white supremacy culture at HOBT. That work remains at the center of our work as the MayDay Council is reimaging a more equitable and accessible MayDay Celebration. We do not pretend to be experts in this work, and we know we have a long way to go to live out our commitment to dismantling white supremacy culture at HOBT.

I demand that you press charges for all officers involved in the incident including David Chauvin and Tou Thao. MPD 150  is a participatory, horizontally-organized effort by local organizers, researchers, artists and activists. It is not the project of any organization.

The goal of this initiative is to shift the discussion of police violence in Minneapolis from one of the procedural reforms to one of meaningful structural change.
