Children of Spring
As an adult, walking into the magic and madness of the MayDay build process can be overwhelming. Where do you begin? What incredible creation will you help make?
But kids? They jump right in, with laser focus and boundless creativity. What if we could all see MayDay through the eyes of the children who know and love it?
Thanks to the brilliant team at MindTwist Studio, we can!
In the spring of 2017 the Sebastian, Cici, and Mike, the MindTwist team, set out as first time MayDay goers themselves to film a documentary about MayDay through the eyes of children. Their documentary, Children of Spring, will premiere at HOBT on March 29th!
The MindTwist team followed the artistic process of MayDay, from community meetings, to workshops, to the day itself, and interviewed children, many of whom have been a part of MayDay their entire lives. What they found was pure delight; kids truly embody the best of MayDay, they know they are loved and valued by their community, that their voice matters, and that together we can create the world we want to live in through cardboard, paint, and papier-mâché.
For the MindTwist team, the idea of a future without MayDay as we know it is devastating, and personal. In addition to being filmmakers, Cici & Sebastian are a husband and wife team. When they think about their future, they want their children to be among the thousands who have grown up with MayDay, counting on that day of celebration, the surest sign of springtime.
For now, Cici, Sebastian, & Mike are determined to make the most of MayDay 2019. They say “we haven’t even done papier-mâché yet! We’re ready to get our hands dirty.” And it is their hope that their film Children of Spring will inspire others to action, to protect and sustain the MayDay we know and love!
On March 4th HOBT launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise $50,000 for the MayDay budget!
The MayDay Parade and Festival is about all of us-- our unique identities, our stories, and the art that connects us, inspires us, and empowers us.
Throughout this month long crowdfunding campaign we'll be sharing stories about the magic behind MayDay. To read those stories, click here.
