Four fast facts about In the Heart of the Beast Theater (HOBT)
A statement of presence and intention from the Board of Directors. March 2022.

  1. We are here. We are operating as a theater, presenting puppetry and more! We have a talented staff and interim Executive Director. We are in the community: creating connections for public art making with local organizations; producing an upcoming performance; and giving grants to local artists to produce new work.
  2. MayDay 2022 is happening! HOBT is collaborating on a unique MayDay Season this spring. It will look different from MayDays past. Thanks to the hard work, guidance, and organizing by the MayDay Council, this year's MayDay celebrations will be created by local community partners: Roosevelt High School, MIGIZI, and Kalpulli KetzalCoatlicue. This MayDay Season will feature a political and cultural festival in the form of a block party, with puppets, dance, speakers, food, and more! Come join us!
  3. We are planning.  We received funds to bring in a partner to guide us in honing our vision, values, goals, and strategic plans. This process will support the important work of hiring a new permanent Executive Director, decisions about the Avalon Theater building, and HOBT's continuing  presence and role in this community.
  4. We have not forgotten our roots. The 50-year history of HOBT deeply informs our values as we grow and change in bold and inclusive ways. We cherish what made the theater so vital and beloved—connecting to communities, celebrating the power of art, fighting for the earth, and protesting against injustice.
